Chief Guest Address, National Seminar on Human Rights and Value Education in India sponsored by UGC, Saurashtra University, on the 27th and 28th of March, 2009
Mr. Bimal N Patel (Director(Vice-Chancellor)) of Gujarat National Law University was the Chief Guest at the national seminar on Human Rights and Value Education in India sponsored by UGC, at the Saurashtra University, on the 27th and 28th of March, 2009. Around 30 distinguished participants from all across the country presented their papers on the various themes on Human Rights Education. There was a panel discussion of various experts on different topics which were related to Human Rights. Not only that there was a discussion on Human Rights implementation mechanism of various regional part of world like European Regional Mechanism of HR, UN implementation mechanism for Human Rights etc, there was also a huge debate on refugee law and the protection of disabled people under the law as well as well as the protection of environment in the light of protection of HR.
Addressing the issue of protection and promotion of Human Rights in India, the Director (Vice-Chancellor) elucidated the following points:
1) Minimize the disparity in the implementation of economic social and cultural rights and civil and political rights.
2) Purposeful and concerted plan of action to address human rights related to gender.
3) While addressing the issue of terrorism, the human rights of innocents should not be violated and justice and fairness should be upheld.
The Director (Vice-Chancellor) also met the Principals of the law colleges and discussed the ways and means to enhance cooperation between the GNLU and the law colleges. The Principals unanimously recommended the need to establish a forum of educational system like that of the GNLU helps them in to improving their legal education, research and training in all colleges.
