GNLU ASP (Academic Support Programme)

Innovative ideas to hone academic skills and preserve social values at the GNLU

Gujarat National Law University initiated a creative academic programme during its last academic year to help students to study more in classes other than regular and scheduled teaching sessions. Christened as ‘Academic Support Programme’ (ASP), it provides platform for students to share their academic knowledge and help each other in academics. GNLU ASP acknowledges the fact that students who join the University are not in a level-playing field because of inequality in the society as a result of different socio-economic aspects. As a result, each student has a different capacity, ability and interest in their level of commitment to academics. GNLU ASP gives them an opportunity where students create, build and realize their academic potential and emerge collectively to face modern challenges of society.

Dr. K. Parameswaran, GNLU ASP Faculty Coordinator, said “ASP creates a collective academic strength for student community. When students face a wide variety of problems like language, communication skills and other barriers which affects academics ASP addresses all these issues. It also promotes social values of mutual cooperation and exchange of knowledge. Mr Prashanth Ramdas who is a student coordinator of ASP expressed enthusiasm which students showed in participating in the ASP sessions. Other faculty coordinators of ASP Dr William Nunes and Mr Ramesh Ch Kumar also regularly monitor and counsel students in enriching the programme.

In the last academic year, the ASP facilitated a total of 50 teaching sessions with 27 students as teaching assistants. They engaged in helping their juniors and fellow batch mates to increase knowledge and aspiration for academics. Whenever any subject needs informal discussions other than regular classes, ASP members arranged special sessions on that particular topic taking guidance and inputs from the concerned faculty-member of that subject. Participating students deeply appreciated the initiative as it helped them academically and also establishing more academic/intellectual relations with their colleagues across the university.

The ASP as a team consists of 12 student members, three faculty coordinators with the overall guidance of Director and Dean and Deputy Dean of Academic Affairs of the university. GNLU works towards a research-based teaching university and 2011 will becelebrated as GNLU FIR: GNLU FOCUS ON INNOVATION AND RESEARCH.
